How the New Tribe is Redefining Nigeria’s Policy Engagement
The New Tribe initiative, spearheaded by Prof Pat Utomi and like-minded individuals, is reshaping youth and policy engagement in Nigeria through its Public Policy Cohort. This initiative aims to foster dialogue and intellectual exchange to enhance the nation’s policy landscape.
On November 6, 2024, the Public Policy Cohort convened virtually to outline transformative steps for promoting youth advocacy. A pivotal initiative discussed was the launch of open mic events and town hall meetings at universities. The aim was to harness the power of collaborative discussions among Nigerian students to tackle urgent national challenges.
The open mic sessions, planned monthly or fortnightly, will nurture debate and critical thinking among young Nigerians, while quarterly town halls will connect policymakers and professionals with the academic community. This inclusive approach ensures that diverse voices contribute to the shaping of policies that affect everyday Nigerians. Insights from these engagements will culminate in an annual State of the Nation Report, offering actionable policy recommendations.
The New Tribe recognizes that effective advocacy requires strong leadership and a cohesive approach. Drawing inspiration from the leadership framework of the Lagos Business School, the group is implementing a structured model for its cohort. This model includes assigning coaches to oversee specific initiatives, fostering a rhythm of activities, and creating a sense of shared responsibility among members.
As the New Tribe continues to push boundaries and setting its sights on addressing pressing national challenges in reshaping Nigeria’s future, it has proposed incorporating accountability clauses and social protection measures into the ongoing debate on the tax reform bills. These measures aim to ensure that tax policies are fair and development-focused, promoting economic growth and reducing inequality.
The New Tribe’s push for decentralized governance aims to unshackle states from bureaucratic constraints while enabling them to take ownership of their development and propel Nigeria towards a more prosperous future.
As part of its action plan, the Public Policy cohort will publish a State of the Motherland Report by the end of the month, addressing key policy issues and offering practical solutions. Additionally, a youth advocacy plan will be finalized within two weeks to guide outreach efforts in tertiary institutions and other youth-focused platforms.
Looking ahead, the cohort plans to organize legislative town hall meeting in January 2025, inviting senior statesmen, policymakers, and past presidential candidates to enrich the discourse. These efforts underscore the New Tribe’s commitment to creating a governance framework rooted in accountability, inclusivity, and moral regeneration.
